Care for Older Persons

Although the family continues to be the main source of care for older persons in our community, it is breaking down due to urbanisation, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, unemployment and rising living costs. The need for formal care cannot therefore be overemphasized. However, the most effective way is for social care to be in the home of the older person, with houses adapted to meet the needs and functional limitations that accrue with age.  This ensures that they do not lose their links to their ancestral land and kinship networks. Nonetheless, most marginalized and vulnerable older persons live in semi-permanent, grass-thatched, mud and wattle houses, often either alone or isolated from the rest within the homestead, which exacerbates loneliness, insecurity, and social exclusion.

Rotational Occupancy Care Home

So, while we deliver care to older persons in their homesteads primarily through our home care projects, we have also planned for a care home – not to replace or be a permanent residence, but to offer an alternative ideal home where each of our beneficiaries will have the opportunity to live in, and receive care from our trained staff through a rotational occupancy program where residents rotate in and out of the home on a scheduled basis. This will involve temporary stays for short periods, after which residents return to their original homes. The rotation will be designed to provide respite care, temporary housing during transitions, and/or shared access to specialized care and facilities. Our goal is to alleviate loneliness and social exclusion through change of environment, access to special amenities, and opportunities for social interactions as well as flexible care solutions, and periodic relief to family caregivers.

Additionally, the care home will serve as a means for the foundation to raise funds by providing scheduled care for older persons whose able loved ones may be unavailable due to time constraints or other work/travel commitments.
